Often times I find myself answering the same question.
How did you find THAT at Target? or How long do you spend scouring the racks at Forever 21 or H&M?
And the answer is usually “I don’t. I saw it, tried it on, liked it and I bought it!” But, is that really the answer? Is it that easy or am I really that good? Is it my “eye” for style?
Clearly, I would like to think it’s my “eye” for style but it hasn’t always been that. Trust me, I have the photos to prove it. The more I thought about it the more I reflected about the process that I unconsciously trained myself on. Today, I want to share my 3 tips to look glam so you can do it too!
While we would all love to have a designer friendly shopping budget sometimes it’s just not in the cards…yet. So what do we do in the mean time?
For starters, make sure that you have an idea of what you’re looking for before you go shopping. Not only will this help your budget, but it will also cut down on time. I’m definitely guilty of spending hours among hours in the mall (sorry, Garry!) but the older I get the less time I want to spend looking around. Hellooo, that means more time doing the things you love and wearing your new clothes! My go-to source for inspiration is Pinterest! I love finding inspiration and it helps me envision the pieces that I’m looking for.
Alright, now we’re ready!
- Structured & Fitted Pieces: When pieces fit your body better they automatically look more expensive than they are. Go for pieces that have a more defined shape like this long sleeveless top from Forever 21. The turtleneck adds that unique touch to the shirt while the side slits define your waist. Plus pairing tops like this with fitted denim make the overall look very put together. Stores like Zara and H&M offer denim at way more affordable prices while looking very designer-esque. These jeggings (yes, I said jeggings) are even more affordable and they fit like a glove. They’re currently a favorite of mine!
- When In Doubt, opt for Black: Nothing screams designer more than black articles of clothing and accessories. Fashion history has repeatedly shown us that all black outfits equal instant chicness. Picture Jackie O, Audrey Hepburn & Coco Chanel. Adding black accessories elevate an outfit just like this big floppy hat and sunglasses. They create a mysterious yet chic look which I love. The great thing about having all black accessories is that they allow you to create multiple outfits within your wardrobe so it’s a win-win!
- Keep It Simple: Yes, I said it. Luxury items aren’t about being complicated. They’re usually very clean and simple so make sure to find pieces that fit that aesthetic. For this look I decided to keep mostly everything solid and black. The pop of leopard in the shoes compliment the look instead of overwhelming it.
Easy enough, right?
The great thing about fashion is that you’re able to still find great pieces at very affordable prices…and no one has to know *smiles*. It’s all about having fun and finding pieces that compliment your style! These are just my personal shopping tips, but you’ll develop your own as you continue to find what you’re looking for.
What are some of your tips for making affordable clothing look more expensive?
