We’re in the home stretch to the New Year!
First off, I hope you all had a very Merry Christmas, Hanukah, and/or Kwanza! I spent Christmas with my family in Georgia at my sister and brother-in-law’s new house. Hence, the reasoning behind our trip. And boy was it beautiful! Even with the gruesome 20 hour car ride (tell me about it). Don’t worry, we flew back home on Saturday night.
This was Garry’s first holiday vacation with my family and it got me thinking. I took a stroll down memory lane about how it was when we met each other’s families for the first time. For me, it’s always been a very anxious moment. You always want your first impression to be a great one because you want to prove to the family that you are worth dating their son/daughter. Garry was kind enough to introduce me to his entire family one summer day-without even warning me. Way to kill my anxiety.
Since it’s the holidays (and I’m sure you’ll be spending time with both sides of your loved ones) I decided to share some tips when meeting the parentals.
1. Dress family appropriate: You want to make sure that you’re staying true to your personal style, but with a more conservative spin on it. For this look, I tucked my blouse (the bottom is sheer) into a skirt so my naval isn’t peeking through. In turn, it prevents any immediate mishaps while you’re introducing yourself. Simple enough, right? Tights are always a good idea as well. There’s just something about them that scream preppy chic-think Blair Waldorf. And who doesn’t love Blair?
2. Opt for loose curls: Loose curls are always a must for me. Whether you have long or short hair, I think it looks great and softens your facial features. I like to use my 1″ barrel for each section (thick sections) and leave it for about 6-10 seconds. It allows it to heat up just enough so it’s a nice loose curl. You can also add a bow headband for a more girly-girl look.
3. Stay Classic: Neutral soft makeup is a classic, so why not make that your first impression? I used some soft browns and pinks from the Naked (1 & 3) palette for a soft glam look making sure to keep it simple (leave the falsies at home-until next time). I also went for a nude lip using my Gerard Cosmetics lipstick in the shade ‘nude’ for a hint of color.
4. Be Yourself: The most important part is making sure that you are YOU! Show them your personality and they’ll be sure to love you. After all, that’s the reason why your partner fell in love with you so they will too!
