I am super excited to be able to join the Purple Purse campaign! This is a campaign that allows us to raise awareness around domestic and financial abuse in a very fashionable matter, which seems very form fitting for Love, Grey Skies *wink*
I took a Women’s Studies class in High School and we were able to learn about domestic abuse and the role of the abuser and victim. It was always something that intrigued me because I couldn’t comprehend why someone wouldn’t be able to walk away-why did they feel the need to stay trapped? But it was easier said than done. Those lessons started to (unfortunately) come to light through the years. I was able to notice signs, not only within my own relationships but with my friend’s as well and those easy solutions didn’t seem too favorable anymore. Domestic abuse occurs to one in four women in her lifetime, which is more than breast cancer, ovarian cancer, and lung cancer combined!
Abuse doesn’t only come in the form of violence, it can be financial, mental, and emotional as well. Allowing someone to manipulate and control you with anything is a form of abuse. Financial abuse seems to be more common than not (98% of domestic abuse cases) because it allows the victim to feel trapped since they do not have the financial means to get away. But the Allstate Foundation and we are here to help! Kerry Washington, Purple Purse Ambassador, has designed a limited edition purse which is allowing the conversation around this not-so-spoken about topic to be sparked.
The Allstate Foundation has been distributing Purple Purse charms (which you can see on my Instagram) to allow women to come together and spread awareness. They have invested more than $40 million since 2005 in helping domestic abuse survivors regain financial stability and break free from their abuser. How great is that?!
