I never really knew about my (cliché phrase to follow) passion for fashion (I warned you!) until my sophomore year of college. I mean, don’t get me wrong-I loved shopping just as much as the next girl, but I wasn’t aware that there was more to it than that.
It was my first semester living on campus and I found myself feeling unfulfilled, but I wasn’t sure why. I never took part in any extra-curricular activities in high school and hanging out with my friends was more than enough then. Maybe I was home sick? One day, I came across a flyer for our university’s annual fashion show. They were looking to fill some positions for the committee and I decided to apply for assistant fashion coordinator. I figured at best it would occupy some of my time and I would get to meet some new people. After all, that’s what college is all about right? *wink* At that time, I had no idea how it was going to change my life. The whole process consumed me. But in a good way. Sure, I was exhausted between having to go to class, work, planning meetings, evening practices, and shopping for the show but it made me feel alive. Even the “I’m never doing this again” moments. It wasn’t something that I had ever felt. The day of the show was even more chaotic, but it was a fulfilling type of chaos. Purposeful even. And in the blink of an eye it was all over, well at least it felt that way.
That year we were able to donate around $1,200 to Habitat for Humanity, specifically to New Orleans, to help with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. It might not seem like much, but it was all of our proceeds and the most the team had ever raised before. Needless to say, it was a highly rewarding experience-one that unbeknown to me, would be the start of this love story. Why the trip down memory lane you ask? Well, you can imagine my excitement when I was asked to be a judge for the Broadway by Design fashion show held by Roosevelt Field Mall! I may or may not have jumped up and down *grins*.
Seven students from Nassau Community’s design department were chosen to create one look based on Broadway’s Pippin, Cinderella, or Motown. I was completely blown away by their creativity! Oh, did I mention they only had a $100 budget?! It was so inspiring to see students do what they love and allow their creative juices to flow.
Lately, I’ve been obsessed with turtle necks. Most likely due to the increasingly drop in temperature, but at least I can stay warm and chic at the same time! I found one in a crop top for only $14.95 (score!)! I paired it with this nude midi skirt from Forever 21. The colors compliment each other perfectly for fall! I added my pinky-nude pumps to elongate my legs. A must-do since I’m 5’2″. It allows the skirt to compliment the outfit instead of take away from it if I opted for flats. I added a necklace for a touch of elegance and voila! Preppy chic for a day of judging!Top|Similar Skirt|Forever21 Shoes|ASOS Necklace|Forever21 Coat|Similar
